AS Colour is very pleased to announce the winner of the Little Help project, t-shirtopedia. Luke Hedley from Auckland beat out the competition to win the start up package worth $10,000, below are his four winning prints along with a description of the t-shirtopedia concept straight from his original entry form.
The first run of t-shirtopedia tees have already been printed in a hand numbered run of 150 per print. Luke used a combination of the AS5002 Paper t-shirt and the poly/cotton blended AS 5006 Marble tees and printed the size and print number inside the back neck of each shirt.

Interview with Luke Hedley
We thought it was time to get a bit more information out of the man behind t-shirtopedia, after all winning a prize worth $10,000 is kind of a big deal. It was a rather abrupt launch into the world of t-shirt design for Luke, we called to let him know he had won only three weeks before the party which probably didn’t give him much time for the news sink in. T-shirtopedia seems like more of an ongoing conceptual project than just another basic t-shirt label, Luke calls it "bringing facts to the street" so lets hear some of the inspiration behind the idea and the designs.
What inspired the t-shirtopedia concept of putting encyclopaedic facts on t-shirts?
I was doing a lot of research using encyclopedias and I thought it would be quite cool to put some of that info on t-shirts. I like the idea of a live/interactive encyclopedia, the people that wear the t-shirts might learn something and other people might learn something from viewing the t-shirt on the person.
How do you select which facts to put on the shirts, are they all chosen at random or is there some meaning behind them?
I made a rough category base: Space, Animals, Places, History, Objects, People etc. and tried to get a good spread in my first range. I wanted the facts to be reasonably simple but interesting - the kind of information you might be able to use to win Who wants to be a Millionaire or Sale of the Century.
Do you have a background in design or was the The Little Help project your first foray into t-shirt prints?
I studied design at Elam School of Fine Arts at University of Auckland. The Little Help project was my first foray into t-shirt prints though.
When will people be able to buy t-shirtopedia shirts in a retail store?
I'm going to launch t-shirtopedia in retail stores in September, just in time for the start of Spring and hopefully lots of nice sunny days.
What is your day job?
I'm doing a post grad diploma in Screen Production at Auckland Uni and writing a feature film script with some assistance from the NZ Film Commission.
Tell us your all-time favourite fact, t-shirtopedia related or otherwise?
If you weighed up all the ants in the world it would be roughly the same weight as all the humans.
Which pedia do you consult more often, Wiki or Britannica?
I consult wikipedia the most mainly because I'm always on the computer. Because anyone can write articles on there it's not guaranteed true facts, so I like to consult Britannica and other specialist sources for t-shirtopedia.
What are your future plans for the t-shirtopedia label?
My goal is to move on to new subjects as the others run out so as to exponentially grow the knowledge base and make it a real encyclopedic project. I'd also like to get them out to other countries so it's a truly world wide project. |
