Now in its third year the Little Help Project has a built up a bit of history.  In the last two contests we received entries from over 600 individual designers which equates to almost 2000 different t-shirt designs submitted.   Over the years many entrants have been inspired to launch their own labels, design royalties have been paid out to 25 designers and we have even helped entrants find design jobs with existing clothing brands.  If you are at all interested in Australasian t-shirt design and culture Little Help is meant to be a resource and connecting point for both designers and t-shirt lovers, here’s an overview of the previous contests and past winners .

Our two previous winners have very different design styles but both have forged their own individual paths in the t-shirt design world since taking out the grand prize.

The winner of the second Little Help project t-shirt design contest in 2010 was Lauren Carney (aka Dizzy Little Dotty) from Brisbane, Australia.

Lauren was an early judge’s favourite and she had a winning combination of strong t-shirt sales and hundreds of Facebook likes along with a blog site media blitz that ultimately put her out in front.  AS Colour is very proud to be helping Lauren get a head start with her own t-shirt label and we will be launching her first range at a special event in April.

Here’s a bit about Lauren:
Lauren Carney is a polly-pocket sized artist who inhabits the city of Brisbane.  She describes herself as a curious, forgetful, and confused piece of white meat, who enjoys the company of young trendies and arty types.  Her artwork touches on a variety of mediums, mostly traditional mixed with digital illustration. By combining traditional, free flowing pen-on-paper line work with Photoshop colouring techniques Lauren creates an overall outcome that is whimsical and sometimes cheeky. When she’s not drawing, she is busy collecting fancy dressed friends, tea cups, and bad movies.

Check out the store to get your hands on one of Lauren's tee's. Or check out Lauren's new shopping site.

The winner of the 2009 Little Help project, t-shirtopedia. Luke Hedley from Auckland beat out the competition to win the start up package worth $10,000, below are his four winning prints along with a description of the t-shirtopedia concept straight from his original entry form.

The first run of t-shirtopedia tees have already been printed in a hand numbered run of 150 per print.  Luke used a combination of the AS5002 Paper t-shirt and the poly/cotton blended AS 5006 Marble tees and printed the size and  print number inside the back neck of each shirt.

To find out more check out t-shirtopedia.co.nz or buy t-shirtopedia shirts online at Clever Bastards.

Interview with Luke.

What you have done with the t-shirtopedia brand after winning LHP?

I have developed the brand as a boutique t-shirt design label especially focussing on a mix of geek, chic, street and design aesthetics with (at the moment) a strong focus on NZ subject matter. I have also collaborated with other brands such as Te Papa and Cloudy Bay Vineyards to incorporate my encyclopedic t-shirt concept with their specific products.

Where can people view your range and where can they buy the tees?

The full t-shirtopedia range is available on cleverbastards.co.nz, with various tees also available on foxes.co.nz, endemicworld.co.nz, collectionofcool.com.au and in store at The Poi Room in Auckland and Mirth in Hong Kong

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to develop new ideas and designs, continue to build relationships with other brands for future collaboration and also penetrate foreign markets and sell t-shirtopedia tees around the world!

The Little Help Project animation has been a fixture for the last two years. After we saw Auckland animator Rob Wallace’s self-initiated project inspired by the first Little Help Project we got him on board to create a full clip for the second contest in 2010, here are his two contributions.  To see more of Rob’s work go to www.parallelteeth.com.
